Mobile Monday Kenya
The Mobile Monday Kenya chapter (MOMOKE) started in early 2011 at a colorful launch presided over by the Finnish ambassador and attended by a wide array of guests. We held our first meeting at the iHub on 19th April, and though the attendance was small, it attracted the techie community that had started to make the iHub their home and place of business. Our objective was simple: to encourage conversation and networking amongst the developer community. It was not uncommon to see us huddled in a group of 20 surrounding a white board talking about M-Pesa or MXit’s move into Kenya; if it was interesting and involved technology we talked about it. This uncut approach is what made as unique.
Over time the meetups, which were held once a month, began gathering traction as more and more developers and business people began attending. The launch of the iHub space cemented our meetups as a key event in the iHub calendar. Our attendance grew to 150-200 attendees, and during the 10th anniversary of Mobile Monday held in Helsinki from September 27th-29th, the Kenya chapter was officially handed to the lead, John Wesonga, as the founders pin was bestowed upon him. This marked a major milestone of the chapter and ushered in corporate support with the likes of Virtual City and Nokia coming on board.
Since then, Mobile Monday Kenya has held over 20 events with more than 4000 participants, with half a dozen companies presenting and more than 40 presentations from individuals being contributed. None of this could have happened without the dedicated team of volunteers plus all the people out there who tweet our events and spread the word.
We believe a stronger developer community ensures a healthy ecosystem for current and future techpreneurs, and we will do our best to ensure that Mobile Monday Kenya achieves that vision.
